about

This compilation is the result of an attempt to track down early pioneer 'bedroom producers'.

In the 1970’s the professional music ‘scene’ and popular music began to be infested with synthesizers but these were largely still prohibitively expensive for the amateur musician. And yet home electronic organs were in their heyday and many models even included a built-in drum machine. Jarre’s ‘Oxygene’ was released in 1976 and many domestic keyboardists must have realised they could re-create the sound pretty easily with their Farfisa or Hammond organs.

Perhaps inspired by this sort of emulation it would have been a logical next step for the home keyboardist to move into a sort of electronica, abandoning the Play Along Popular Tunes organ books for more esoteric fare, emulating Tangerine Dream or Tomita rather than The Beatles or Burt Bacharach.

The music on this compilation proved far harder to track down than 80’s bedroom demos. Probably because these early home pioneers had not considered uploading their old reels of tape - but nevertheless I found enough material to make this volume worthwhile.
