about

"Sounds like vintage electronica, looks like vintage electronica..."

The ninth volume in the Bedroom Cassette Masters series, being a further compilation of synth & drum machine songs and tunes, most of which were recorded in bedrooms around the world between 1980-89. Two hours of music by over thirty artists, all with the same lo-fi analogue spirit in mind. The download includes an extensive 150 page pdf guide with artist features, gear information & vintage ephemera PLUS a printable j-card for compact cassette.

My early trawls for authentic electronica, made inadvertently and beautifully lo-fi by the necessarily amateur nature of its production, were not particularly successful. The Net contains everything, but without labels it is impossible to navigate. Many musicians who had laboured in their bedrooms during the eighties, struggling to sync monophonic synthesizers to drum machines using control voltage clearly felt the way to present their vintage work to the world was to re-record it in the digital realm with plug-ins and thus their web pages did not contain the words “four-track”, “cassette” or “bedroom”. And for each person who had even bothered to go this far how many others simply did not have the inclination, the confidence or the time? And of this small minority how many saw in those original cassette recordings something magical?

So here be treasure...

In this ninth compilation we present the full smorgasbord of musical fare produced by the first generation of bedroom musicians and producers who did not throw those old tapes away. Enjoy these rare artefacts and take them at face value, revel in their awkwardness, their naïveté and their sometimes startling originality.
